Just because they have a good a resume…
Dig past the football days
Remember Uncle Rico from the movie Napoleon Dynamite? His resume would say - “Back in 82 he could throw the pigskin a quarter mile”
Would you hire Uncle Rico to lead your college football team? I doubt it, but his high school football resume and mouth says he is great.
You have heard this before. People are more than their resumes. They really are.
Just because they worked at Facebook, doesn’t make them good at hustle and hard work.
Just because they went to Harvard doesn’t mean they can bring revenue into your company.
Just because they were the “Head of Sales” doesn’t mean they can close deals.
Just because they have some short stints on their resume doesn’t mean you shouldn’t talk with them.
People have stories (life is messy when you live it) and interests and goals with their career. Your #1 job with hiring is to dig deep. Assume nothing.
The guy/gal from Harvard has the same 50% chance of performing well at the job as the guy/gal from Pima Community College.
I want to know who has the discipline now. Did the Harvard graduate stop working hard after their degree? Are they “getting after it” or now just talking about how good their college days were?
Why did the Pima Community College graduate attend that school? Maybe it was cost, maybe they struggle in school but work hard and succeed in other areas of their life…
Dig deep and see what they learned after their Uncle Rico days of throwing the pigskin. Find out their goals and what they are good at and not good at.
